NANNING, Dec. 25 -- Former Guangzhou Party chief Wan Qingliang went on trial at a court in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Friday.

Wan is accused of accepting bribes worth 111.25 million yuan (17.2 million U.S. dollars) between 2000 and 2014 to help others gain projects or promotions, according to an indictment from the procuratorate.

Wan confessed to the crime at the Nanning Intermediate People's Court on Friday.

The verdict will be announced at a date yet to be decided.

Born in 1964, Wan is a native of Wuhua County, Guangdong Province. He served as the Party chief of Jiaoling County, Jieyang City and vice governor of Guangdong Province before becoming Guangzhou's Party chief in December 2011.
