"The Assassin" by Hou Hsiao-Hsien won the award for Best Director. Set in ninth-century China, at the end of the Tang Dynasty, a highly trained female assassin is sent back to her home province to kill its governor, her former lover.
Jia Zhangke's "Mountains May Depart" competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival while he received special recognition with the Carrosse d'Or award during the opening ceremony at the Director's Fortnight sideline event.
