    3. Tianjin explosion sounds safety alarm

    At midnight on August 12, a massive explosion tore through a warehouse in an industrial zone of China’s port city, Tianjin, claiming 173 lives and causing heavy property loss.

    The warehouse belongs to Tianjin Dongjiang Port Ruihai International Logistics Co. Ltd, a company licensed to store, distribute and import dangerous chemicals.

    China’s State Council then set up a team to investigate the accident and bring those responsible to justice.

    A nationwide safety inspection on hazardous chemicals was launched by the State Council after the accident. By the end of September, over 3 million cases of illegal operation were cracked and 2,752 people held responsible.

    4. China holds V-Day parade

    China held a grand parade to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War in Beijing on Sept. 3, 2015.

    Thousands of Chinese troops, along with their counterparts from 17 countries, marched past Tiananmen Square to celebrate the grand event. The parade was the highlight of several months of commemorative activities.

    Chinese president Xi Jinping delivered a speech and inspected the troops. He also announced the cut of 300,000 military personnel on the parade day.

    5. China's Tu Youyou receives 2015 Nobel Prize

    China's pharmacologist Tu Youyou received the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on Oct. 5.

    Together with her team, Tu managed to extract a substance from Artemisia annua, or sweet wormwood, which proved effective in reducing mortality rates for patients suffering from malaria.

    Tu is the first Chinese Nobel laureate in physiology or medicine, as well as the first Chinese citizen to receive the Nobel Prize in the natural sciences.

    6. New rules published on clean governance of the CPC

    The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee published new rules on clean governance and sanctions for those who violate the Party code of conduct in an effort to tighten disciplinary regulations and stress proper behavior of party members.

    The two new regulations, adopted on Oct. 18, updated existing rules deemed incompatible with the Party following the launch of its anti-corruption drive.

    China stepped up its efforts against corruption in this year. Several senior officials were expelled from their positions or are under investigation.
