5-time Olympic diving gold medalist Wu Minxia announces relationship (2)

“She got hurt in the preliminary contest for the 2010 Diving World Series in Qingdao, which made her feel very depressed. I texted her all night to comfort her until 4 a.m.”

A quick glance through comments on Wu’s recent Weibo post reveals that many Internet users admire Zhang’s handsome appearance.

“As a trained broadcaster, he has a beautiful voice. But the face...well, it's just okay,” Wu said jokingly in an interview. “Compared with appearance, I value my partner’s character and temperament more. As an athlete, training occupies most of my time and energy. He understands me, tolerates me and supports me,” Wu continued.

“I am satisfied to be called ‘the man behind the gold medals,’” Zhang added.

Zhang and Wu may be calm about their relationship and future, but many Chinese people are concerned about Wu’s condition. Twenty-five years of professional diving have left her with heavy physical trauma, including problem with her lower back, knees and shoulders. Her doctor once said that she has been hurt everywhere except her head.

Wu said she plans to retire after the Rio Olympics, and settle down with her fiancé in Shanghai, her birthplace. She is also planning to apply for post-graduate studies at Shanghai University of Sports, Jiefang Daily reported.
