    US Consul General ties the knot with Chinese gay partner

    Hanscom Smith, a senior diplomat and the U.S. Consul General in Shanghai, married his Chinese male partner Lyu Yingzong (Eric Lu) during his holiday leave in San Francisco, California.

    Senior diplomat Hanscom Smith married his Chinese male partner Lyu Yingzong (Eric Lu) in San Francisco, California during his holiday leave.

    The coast city is considered a fairly important place in supporting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) movements.

    Born in Maine, the United States, Smith holds a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University and two master’s degrees from the London School of Economics and Political Science and Princeton University.

    With a good command of foreign languages, such as French, Danish, Khmer and Chinese, Smith previously served in the Office of Japanese Affairs at the Department of State and as the team leader at the United States Provincial Reconstruction Team in Muthanna Province, Iraq. He was also a diplomat serving in the U.S. embassies in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Copenhagen, Demark, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Bangkok, Thailand, Kabul, Afghanistan and Beijing, China.
