Wu Jun, a policeman in Xishui county in central China's Hubei province, used his body to suppress a bomb and prevent other citizens and policemen from getting hurt. However, in doing so, Wu was severely injured. He is now contending with permanent disability and disfigurement, according to his doctor.

On Feb. 10, Wu received a call saying that a man was throwing explosives from his house in Baota Village. Wu immediately rushed to the scene, where a villager was attempting to use homemade bombs to attack the police. The man’s body was wrapped in circles of wire, ending in a bomb’s fuse. The homemade bomb was hanging in front of his chest. Inside his house was his sick mother.

As the confrontation went on, the man became more and more agitated. After about three hours, police decided to break down the back door of his house to gain entry. The man then lit the bomb’s fuse. Wu covered the fuse with his chest and attempted to extinguish it; at the same time, the man tried to stop Wu with a knife. The bomb finally exploded, and Wu was seriously injured. Fortunately, the man and his mother were saved. There were also a lot of fireworks in the house that did not catch on fire, and no other villagers were hurt in the bombing.

Wu is currently in the ICU. His parents keep concealed from his injuries.
