Migrant workers in Chongqing go back to hometown to start business

    Email|Print

Hundreds of thousands of people in Kaixian county of southwest China's Chongqing leave their home to work in cities every year.

For the time being, some of these migrant workers have returned to Kaixian to start nearly 30,000 business entities with total investment of more than 27.5 billion yuan, contributing to over 50 percent of the county's economic growth.

There are more than 800 hundred restaurants named "Chengdu Delicacies" in Beijing, among which 90 percent are operated by people from Kaixian county. The migrant workers make up a large share of the owners of these restaurants.

Xie Shihong, 46, was an influential man in this sector. In 2002, Chen Daili from Kaixian made a fortune by opening the first "Chengdu Delicacies" restaurant in Beijing, which encouraged other migrant workers from his hometown.

Xie opened a "Chengdu Delicacies" restaurant of nearly 100 square meters near the Beijing West Railway Station with the 200,000 yuan he borrowed from his relatives and friends. His business went so well that he has opened seven "Chengdu Delicacies" restaurants among which the largest is over 700 square meters. In addition, he studied a MBA program in Peking University.

Xie has co-founded a company to manufacture special aviation dynamic materials. Xie and his partners are applying for an international patent for the rotary displacement pump with two rotors they have developed.
