Thousands of Olive Ridley sea turtles lay eggs on Costa Rican coast

Around 250,000 turtles were expected to lay eggs at Ostional beach from Oct. 6 to 8, according to a local marine biologist.

On Saturday, the Ostional beach saw the thirteenth mass nesting arrivals this year and the largest number of arrivals for a single day in recent years.

The Ostional Wildlife Refuge is located on the Pacific coast of northwest Costa Rica's Guanacaste Province. As it is located in the remote areas, the access to the Ostional Wildlife Refuge is difficult. The turtles lay eggs over three to five days for each month in Ostional Wildlife Refuge.

Olive Ridley sea turtles live in the warm waters of the Indian and Pacific oceans. The mass nesting arrivals occur from September through January of the next year.

The eggs laid by turtles have a little probability of survival. The turtles lumbering ashore later will crush the eggs left untended by the turtles at an earlier time or throw these eggs out of the nests. Turtle eggs are prone to vultures, insect larvae or bad weather.
