The first reflecting unit of the five hundred meter aperture spherical telescope (FAST) in Qiannan of southwest China's Guizhou province was successfully assembled on August 2, 2015.

In the next few months, 4,450 reflecting units will form an area as large as nearly 30 football pitches to capture radio signals billions of light years away.

According to FAST Project Office, the FAST can be used to observe the pulsars, quasars and other faint radiation, and to help disclose the mysteries of the initial chaos of the universe, the distribution of dark matters and galaxy evolution. It can also be used in deep space exploration, pulsar autonomous navigation, high resolution microwave patrol and space weather forecasting.
