About a dozen finless porpoises appeared in the Yangtze River in Nanjing, capital city of China’s Province of Jiangsu on July 17, once again bringing people’s attention to this endangered species of dolphin.

The porpoises appeared right after somebody released some captured fish into the river, the longest in Asia. These fish became the prey of the porpoises, which were trying to capture and eat the fish.

The Yangtze finless porpoise is one the most endangered species in China. In recent years, many porpoises died when they came in contact with such things as electric wires, oars and foul water in the river. Now there are less than 1,000 finless porpoises left in the Yangtze River.

The river used to be home to two different species of dolphin – the Yangtze finless porpoise and the Baiji dolphin. In 2006, however, the Baiji dolphin was declared functionally extinct.
