Bai Gefen, 47, is a single mother in Yongfu county, Guilin city, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. She supports her adopted daughter's study in college through waste picking.

Bai's son died in an accident and her marriage broke up 20 years ago. One day she adopted a one-month-old infant. And then Bai, her mother and the foster daughter stuck together and helped each other in coping with difficulties.

Bai's temporary fruit stand in the street was shut down in 2012. She has been a waste picker since then.
