The famous American writer Pearl S. Buck’s former residence in Nanjing University has been renovated and is now open to the public.

Former U.S. president George H.W. Bush toured the Pearl S. Buck House in October, 1998. He explained that like millions of other Americans, he had gained an appreciation of the Chinese through Buck’s writing. Born in the State of Virginia, Buck was brought to China by her parents when she was four years old. She was deeply influenced by traditional Chinese culture. After graduating from college, Buck returned to China and married John Lossing Buck, an agricultural economist and missionary. From 1920 to 1933, the Bucks made their home in Nanjing on the campus of Nanking University, where both held teaching positions.

It was in this very house that Pearl S. Buck finished many of her works, including her first novel, The Exile, and The Good Earth. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize in literature for her epic descriptions of peasant life in China in the early 1890s.
