Chinese FM holds phone talks with US secretary of state, hopes China, US to create conditions for development of bilateral relations

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday expressed hopes that China and the US will work in the same direction, make preparations for high-level interactions, and create conditions for the development of bilateral relations, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks in a phone call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to the Xinhua.

Wang said that China-US relations have a bearing on the direction of the world. A sound, stable and sustainable bilateral relationship serves the long-term interests of both countries and meets the expectations of the international community.

Wang noted that the President Xi Jinping and President Trump are both world-class leaders, and have maintained long-term engagement and mutual respect. This has become the most valuable strategic asset in China-US relations, according to Xinhua.

China-US economic and trade ties have once again encountered fluctuations, the economic and trade talks in Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur helped clarify positions, enhance mutual understanding and reach a framework consensus on resolving the pressing issues on a reciprocal basis, Wang noted.

This once again proves that as long as both sides faithfully implement the important consensus reached between the two heads of state, uphold the spirit of equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit, resolve differences through dialogue, and avoid resorting to pressure tactics, it is possible to stabilize and move the relationship forward, Wang said.

Rubio said that China-US relations are the most important bilateral relationship in the world, and that he looks forward to high-level engagements to send a positive signal to the international community, according to Xinhua.
