China refutes Taiwan island's demand to participate in intl organizations like ICAO, urges following one-China principle
When asked to comment on a report saying that US Senator Ted Cruz had sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, urging the US government to advocate for Taiwan island's membership in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and that Lin Chia-lung, head of Taiwan's so-called foreign affairs authorities, claimed that "mainland's obstruction of Taiwan island's participation in the ICAO has posed potential risks to global aviation safety," Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, noted that regarding the issue of Taiwan island's participation in international organizations, including ICAO, China's position remains consistent and clear: it must be handled in accordance with the one-China principle.
As a part of China, Taiwan has no right to join the ICAO. The DPP authorities, in collusion with external forces, fabricate various reasons to demand participation in ICAO conferences and other activities, with the real intention of challenging the basic international consensus on the one-China principle. Their political maneuvers and provocative actions will undoubtedly face resolute opposition and failure, Chen emphasized during the regular press conference on Wednesday.
The spokesperson added that China has always valued the needs of Taiwan compatriots in the field of civil aviation. The channels for Taiwan to access ICAO standards, recommended practices, and related information are open, and Taiwan enjoys convenient air connectivity with many cities around the world. Facts show that Taiwan's aviation safety and air connections with other regions have nothing to do with whether the DPP authorities participate in ICAO activities.
