Profile: Ho Iat Seng, Macao's chief executive-designate

    (Xinhua)    13:51, August 25, 2019

MACAO, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Ho Iat Seng was elected on Sunday as the fifth-term chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), awaiting appointment of China's central government.

Born in Macao in 1957, Ho comes from a well-off local business family.

From 2004 to 2009, Ho served as a member of the Executive Council of the Macao SAR. In October 2013, he was elected president of the Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR and was re-elected in October 2017. He has been a deputy of China's National People's Congress (NPC) and a member of the NPC Standing Committee.

In April 2019, Ho announced his decision to run for the election and submitted his resignation to the NPC Standing Committee, which then accepted his resignation.

Ho Iat Seng was accepted as candidate for the fifth-term chief executive of the Macao SAR in July by the region's chief executive election management committee.

He was the only person who submitted a proposed bulletin before the deadline of July 25, making him the sole candidate. Ho, for the candidacy, gained 379 endorsements from the 399-strong chief executive election committee.

In Sunday's election, Ho gained 392 votes.
