China is monitoring the overall situation in the Taiwan Strait, a statement by the Ministry of National Defense said on Thursday.

The statement was released after reports said a US Navy destroyer entered the Taiwan Strait as it was tracking and monitoring Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning which was en route to Qingdao port from Hong Kong, where it was taking part in the celebrations to mark 20 years since the return of the region to China, earlier this month.
