China ranks first in the world for under-construction nuclear power units

As of July 2016, the total installed capacity of nuclear power on the Chinese mainland reached 55 million kilowatts. There are 34 sets of nuclear power generating units currently in operation, with 20 more under construction. China is ranked first in the world for nuclear power units currently under construction, People’s Daily Online learned from a nuclear conference held in Hangzhou.

China also boasts the biggest investment in research on nuclear power, as well as the strongest and most complete nuclear industry system. China is gradually becoming the center of nuclear power development in the world, according to Li Guanxing, president of the Chinese Nuclear Society.

The global installed capacity of nuclear power will reach 370 million kilowatts by 2050, said Qian Zhimin, general manager of China Nuclear E&C Group. Safety and economic efficiency are crucial factors that influence the development of nuclear power. Qian added that technology and innovation are the most important ways to address security concerns related to nuclear power.
