This year’s gaokao, China’s annual college entrance examination, is drawing near. For the first time in history, cheating on the examination is now an actual crime.

Cheaters can be sentenced to up to seven years in jail. In south China’s Guangzhou city, in addition to passing through a metal detector, students also have to scan their fingerprints to get into examination rooms.

This year the gaokao will use a nationally unified exam paper, which means that strict secrecy is essential. Every process leading up to this year’s test, including transportation, distribution and retrieval, will be monitored; transportation will even be supervised and controlled by GPS systems. After the examination starts, proctors will do an extra check of students’ identities.
