The ACPR50S project of marine nuclear power platforms has been included in the 13th Five-Year plan for innovative energy technologies with the approval of the National Development and Reform Commission, according to China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN).
Developed by the CGN solely, ACPR50S marine small modular reactors can ensure steady supply of electricity for oil and gas exploitation, and for islands development. Each reactor can generate 200,000 kilowatts of power. For the time being, the CGN is working on the preliminary design of ACPR50S project. The GCN plans to launch a ACPR50S demonstration project in 2017 and the project is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2020.
The CGN is also working on the ACPR100 small modular reactors, each of which can generate 450 megawatts of power. The small modular reactors, which are complimentary to million-kilowatt class nuclear power plants, can be used in large industrial parks and remote mountainous areas.
