More than 60 percent of the American public oppose the deployment of U.S. forces if a military conflict occurs between China and Japan over the disputed Diaoyu islands, according to a survey published on Tuesday by the Genron NPO.

The survey also said 60 percent of the Japanese public see a further increase in China’s influence in Asia regarding the “influence in Asia in the next 10 years”.

The survey was conducted in Japan, the U.S., China and South Korea at the same time. Only 31 percent of the American public say that U.S. influence in Asia, which Washington is strengthening with the re-balance strategy, will increase in the future, according to the survey.

Moreover the survey shows that majorities in Japan, the United States and South Korea want to keep U.S. military presence at its present level.
