China's first museum showcasing pictures on the history and sovereignty of Diaoyu Islands was opened on Liugong Island in Weihai, a coastal city of eastern China's Shandong province on Sept. 7, 2015.

AS part of a series of commemoration events marking the 70th anniversary of the victory of Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, it got nods from the State Oceanic Administration (SOA).

"Why was the hall built? To preserve the history and guard dignity," said Ren Guanggai, vice director of publication and educational center with the SOA, at the launching ceremony of the museum.

"China's territory is huge but every inch of land should be protected", he added.

Currently, the majority of displays on show are pictures but the local management committee said multimedia and films would also be added in the future. The State Oceanic Administration is planning to make the museum a permanent establishment.

Exhibitions with a similar theme were previously held in other provinces such as Fujian and Zhejiang.
