? Couples who engage in meaningful and deep conversations are happier

? Those who chit chat about shallow things are less happy

? If you discuss your childhood, fears and the future, you're happier

What do you and your partner talk about after a long day at work? Is it how your day went or do you delve deep into chat about current affairs?

According to new scientific research, the conversation topics that you and your partner engage in say a lot about how happy you are in your relationship.

The study, which was published in Psychological Science, claims that couples who engage in meaningful and deep conversations - such as their political views and insecurities - are happier than those who make small talk about topics like the weather.

Did you know that the conversation topics that you and your partner engage in say a lot about how happy you are in your relationship? The deeper, the better, reveals new research

After analysing couples, researchers discovered that those who only chit-chatted for around 10 per cent of the time were happier in their relationship.

In comparison, couples who spent a third of their conversation time talking about shallow topics were the unhappiest.

If you and your partner discuss things like childhood, past relationships, family ties, current affairs, TV and movies and the future, you're in a happy relationship

So what are the conversation topics that determine you're in a happy relationship?

They were identified as embarrassing moments, political viewpoints, fears, insecurities, childhood, past relationships, family ties, current affairs, TV and movies and the future.

The research is slightly 'chicken and egg' with researchers being unsure whether couples are happy because they can talk about deeper subjects, or whether they talk deeply because they are happy.
