JAKARTA, April 23 -- Leaders of Asian and African countries pledged here Thursday to collectively combat extremism, racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.

In the 41-item Bandung Message, an outcome document adopted at the conclusion of the two-day Asian-African Summit, recognized moderation as an important value in all forms of extremism, and to promote dialogue, mutual respect, understanding and acceptance.

"We strive to make effective use of relevant regional, global mechanisms for this purpose," said the message.

It recognized the important role of media and communication tools in combating all forms of extremism.

Leaders of some 30 countries from the two continents and representatives from around 100 nations are attending the Asian- African events, running until April 24.
