BEIJING, April 23 -- Road surface cave-ins in southern Beijing disrupted traffic on Thursday morning, causing congestions along the south third ring road.

The cave-ins occurred at around 9 a.m. on the west road of the south third ring road, near the Yuquanying bridge. It covered an area of nine square meters and is three meters in deep.

Another 16-square-meter pit also occurred 15 meters away from the first spot.

No injuries or vehicle damage was reported.

Authorities said the cave-ins were caused by tunnel construction and will be repaired before 5 a.m. Friday.
