China's tourism regulator is launching a three-year action plan to dramatically improve the quality and quantity of toilets all over the country.

The National Tourism Administration said China would build 33,000 new public restrooms and renovate 24,000 existing ones from 2015 to 2017.

It is calling for governments at various levels to introduce favorable policies in areas such as land use and taxation and provide financial support to aid the plan.

The administration would help regulate the standard of toilets, granting certification to those that meet the criteria.

The three-year project will take a step-by-step approach to ensure sufficient numbers and hygienic conditions of restrooms at tourism attractions.

Restrooms should be adapted to local conditions and be harmonious with their surroundings, reflecting local character and culture, according to the plan.
