Acclaimed American actor Harrison Ford is in hospital following a plane crash.

It's being reported the 72-year old has been hospitalized with multiple cuts to his face and head after the single-engine plane he was flying went down in a golf course outside Los Angeles.

It's believed mechanical failure brought the vintage aircraft down.

There are conflicting reports about the extent of Ford's injuries, though LA police say he was admitted to hospital in stable condition.

Harrison Ford, an aviation enthusiast, is best known for his roles at Indiana Jones and as Han Solo in the Star Wars franchise.

The 72-year old had his leg broken last year while filming the latest installment of the Star Wars films, which is due out later this year.
