LOS ANGELES, Jan. 14-- Delta Airlines announced Wednesday that it plans to start daily nonstop service on July 9 between Los Angeles International Airport and Shanghai Pudong Airport.

The plan still needs to be approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Chinese government, the U.S. company said.

The start of Shanghai service will mark Delta's fourth daily nonstop flight to the Asia-Pacific region in addition to Tokyo-Narita, Tokyo-Haneda and Sydney.

A 291-seat Boeing 777-200LR aircraft will be used on the route.

Delta and its subsidiaries operate over 5,400 flights daily and serve an extensive domestic and international network that includes 333 destinations in 64 countries on six continents, as of June 2014.

Headquartered in Atlanta, it employs nearly 80,000 employees worldwide and serves nearly 165 million customers each year.
