KUNMING, July 4  -- A former university president in southwest China's Yunnan Province stood trial Thursday for bribery charges, a local court said on Friday.

Zhen Chaodang, former president of Yunnan Minzu University, was accused of taking bribes worth more than 7.4 million yuan (1.2 million U.S.dollars) from multiple companies and individuals, according to the Intermediate People's Court of Chuxiong Prefecture.

The bribes included 7.1 million yuan and 10,000 euros in cash as well as a Buick car, the prosecutors said.

The prosecutors said evidence showed Zhen had sought benefits for those who bribed him.

The court has not announced a verdict yet.
