SHANGHAI, May 27 -- Russian warships left the Shanghai port on Tuesday after a seven-day joint drill with Chinese navy in the East China Sea.

The two countries conducted the joint maneuver from May 20 to 26, involving 14 warships, two submarines, nine airplanes and six helicopters.

The drill focused on escorts, search and rescue, identification, anti-submarine work and the freeing of hijacked ships.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin attended the launch of the naval exercise.

The two sides also formed a regular system for the organization and implementation of such war games, paving the way for future joint drills.
