Huawei poses no threat to British national security: gov't report

LONDON, March 26 -- Chinese telecoms company Huawei did not pose a threat to Britain's national security, a report released by British government showed.

"... any risks to UK national security from Huawei's involvement in the UK's critical networks have been sufficiently mitigated," the report said.

Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Center (HCSEC) was established in 2010 in Britain's Banbury. "It is a crucial part of a set of arrangements agreed earlier that year between the company and HM Government about mitigating any perceived risks to UK national security arising from the involvement of Huawei in parts of the UK's critical national infrastructure," the report showed.

"Through HCSEC, the UK Government is provided with insight into Huawei UK's strategies and product ranges," the report added.

To insure the independence of HCSEC's judges, HCSEC Oversight Board was established in early 2014 by British government.

"A rigorous exercise to provide independent assurance of HCSEC's operational independence from Huawei ... and HCSEC has operated with sufficient independence from Huawei Headquarters," said the board in the report.

"Overall therefore, the Oversight Board concludes that in the year 2014-15 HCSEC fulfilled its obligations in respect of the provision of assurance that any risks to UK national security from Huawei's involvement in the UK's critical networks have been sufficiently mitigated," said the board.
