BEIJING, March 18 -- China United Airlines (CUA) will shift to a low-cost carrier model in full scale beginning March 29, the company announced in Beijing on Wednesday.

The company will implement "brand-new" service options under the low-cost model, CUA President Zhang Lanhai said at a press conference.

The airline will charge for extras like food, seat allocation, flight delay and air-travel accident insurance as well as baggage weighing over 10 kilograms.

Four featured products will be available beginning March 29 with ticket prices ranging from 8 yuan (1.3 U.S. dollars) to 588 yuan. A total of 80,000 such tickets will be offered within this year in order to attract customers, said Zhang.

The CUA, a subsidiary of state-owned enterprise China Eastern, has 27 Boeing 737 planes by the end of July last year, and operates passenger services to more than 70 Chinese cities, mainly the second and third-tier cities.

It is the only commercial airline using Beijing Nanyuan Airport as its base.

The 105-year old Beijing Nanyuan Airport is the oldest airport in China, located just 13 km south of downtown Beijing.

The airport, which was primarily a military airfield, had only one terminal before. With a new terminal constructed in 2012, the airport is able to serve 6 million passengers a year.
